Black screen after "Xubuntu 12.10" and the 4 dots when booting from Live CD

So I got an old computer from work and I wanted to fix it up for the kids with Xubuntu. Xubuntu because it's quite old :) The thing is, it won't even let me install the damn thing. It boots up to the screen saying "Xubuntu 12.10" that has the 4 dots, then the screen goes black, and sometimes flashes between "screen-off black" and "normal black". I have also tried Linux Mint 14 XFCE, which gave me a blank white screen with a non-movable cursor. Can anyone help?

Please post a complete hardware description.

Curious on this also. Most likely just an adjustment to be made on video type. During that panel, it starts to load the graphics layer. A hardware description would let us figure out just what you need to adjust for your specific hardware.
