View Full Version : Removing Smart Scopes

I'm posting this here because I think this is going to be the best place to discuss.

I want to know if it's possible to remove the Unity Smart Scopes? Basically I like to keep a lean machine. I always remove just about everything I can - I actually only use the app and file lens', I don't use any of the others so I remove them. I'm not going to use the smart scopes because I don't want information being sent to 3rd parties (even Canonical).

I like Unity (when it first came out I didn't think I'd be saying that!) so I would like to keep using Unity, but I just want to remove smart scopes... There are going to be a lot of them I know, which means that the list to remove is going to be long, but Synaptic or a quick bit of sudo apt-get purge should take care of that.

There are the privacy controls there which will let me prevent the smart scopes from working, but I want to remove them.

So the question is simple... Can the smart scopes be removed? Can I still just leave the app and file lens' locally without any of the smart scope stuff.

Anyone get any experience with this?

No need to worry about this yet - smart scopes aren't going to be included in 13.04 (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/03/smart-scopes-not-mature-enough-to-ship-in-ubuntu-13-04).

More widely: I haven't tested it myself, but I'm under the impression that you can turn off all internet-related stuff in the dash with a single GUI switch & it will fall back on purely local searching; so I would assume that uninstalling smart scopes would just make the dash fall back to local searching.

I did have smart scopes when I installed Unity 7 to test it but an upgrade to Unity 6.12 broke the desktop and I had to purge the PPA in order to get a working desktop.

If you search Synaptic for unity lens or unity scopes you will find them. There are not many on 13.04. Some in the list are not installed. To do what you want you will need to remove lens and scopes as appropriate.

Regards.

Excellent,

Thank you very much for your responses.

It may only be a small thing, but I think this is what does make Linux one of the best OS's to use. The fact of the matter is if you don't like it you can remove it... If you really don't like it, you can change it! Will just have to wait now till the next LTS (I only use LTS's because I need my machine to be stable).

Many thanks

I wouldnt worry about smart scopes anyway, you can probably turn them off once they become a standard.
