Wish You Were Here - everyone should listen to that album now, it was written for him.

What a shock... Just a day after the P.U.L.S.E DVD release, Sid is gone.
Rest (finally) in peace.

Strange thing, I've bought "The Pink Floyd And Syd Barrett Story" documentary DVD the other day...

Was listening his things all the evening... He had type of that ordinary type of talant that many people will hardly understand. Yet, many think he had lack of talant actually. But I do not think so, at least in his Pink Floyd years. Just read his "Bike" lyrics, and you'll understand what I mean.

It's kind of fitting in a strange sort of way that David Gilmour's new album "On an Island" is out.

[...] He bricked up his windows, spent long hours staring at the door.

Bugger. I've loved this guy since I was about 16, I've even got his solo albums that most people think are rubbish :-(

Would be very apt had those words not been written by Roger Waters, Five years after Syd had left the group..........................

Very emotional though, which is probably even more applicable in this thread............................................ ..............

Have a bit more open mind Openmind :)

Just because people want to show their respect to the man in this thread doesn't mean that you have to start comparing him to Hitler and Stalin.

He had mental problems, couldn't handle his success and used drugs? Well then by all logic we should forget him and say nothing good about him right?

Wrong! Even though he might have not been your favorite musician he influenced numerous artists and was responsible for the great Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Who knows, maybe if it hadn't done so well Pink Floyd wouldn't have continued..? And he was definitely an influence to the rest of the guys in the band.

And yes, those words are written by Waters but they're about Syd.

R.I.P. you crazy diamond.

You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the
moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by
shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you
crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random
precision, rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you
seer of visions, come on you painter, you piper, you
prisoner,
and shine!

He was a creative genius who gave me many hours of joy. His life may have taken a bad turn but his legacy will always be about the music.

Any ways. It saddens me. Pipper of the Gates of Dawn is one of my favs. I not happy to hear that he has passed. :( I hope that waters and gilmore can come together and realize who was the founder of PF. It is funny that waters is going on tour in the states.

I found out yesterday morning and was devastated. I am so thankful to have had a mom that brought me up on such great music like Pink Floyd (I'm 22 now). It's amazing how much Syd influenced the band even with only doing one full album and a handfull of songs.

God speed Syd, find rest.

Mr Barrett was the best thing that ever happened to Pink Floyd.
After his departure the band turned into a tedious progstrosity.

Other people may think Pink Floyd became one of the very best rock group ever to have existed...

I signed online yesterday and the first thing I see on the front page of Wikinews is "Syd Barret dies at age 60" and I was shocked.

He was a good song writer, if you see my review (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=204716) of Piper at the Gates of Dawn he did some good work.

Other people may think Pink Floyd became one of the very best rock group ever to have existed...Agree! But Barrett was just different.

i think he's probably in a happier place now. it seems that, when he was 'alive', he wasn't really 'alive'. he was merely existing.
with respect to syd, my personal opinion is that pink floyd were at their best after he left. in my eyes, pink floyd equals roger waters. they improved dramatically after syd barrett left, did their best and definitive work (DSOTM, the wall, atom heart mother, etc) with roger waters as songwriter, then went worse after roger waters was booted out.
