I am thinking about getting a 11" mac air, then installing ubuntu on it, because I know I'll just end up using ubuntu, as I am becoming completely obsessed by it. Can anyone recommend any kind of platforms - especially ones made specifically for ubuntu that follow a same kind of build quality and spec as a mac air?

Many thanks :)

Dell does a remixed "developer edition" of its XPS ultrabook line, looks like what you might want:

"Developer Edition" won't stop you from using day-to-day desktop Ubuntu. It's a bit expensive though.

Otherwise a couple of vendors do Ubuntu:
System76 do a 14" laptop that looks very good, although it's probably a bit heavier with a bit less battery life: https://www.system76.com/laptops/model/lemu4
They've been selling Ubuntu laptops with a very good reputation for years.

Zareason do good looking stuff too, including one that is explicitly called an ultrabook: https://zareason.com/shop/Laptops/

Out of the three I'd go for System76, but i'm not going to be getting a new computer for a while. In the case of Dell and System76 there are corresponding sections in this forum where you can get more information :D

Canonical also does certification for computers to be guaranteed to work with Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/desktop/
