I'm been running Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric with Xfce 4.8 for well over a year, and it has just recently begun having this problem. I have not been able to correlate it with any activity.

The computer will just intitiate shutdown. Sometimes afterward it will hang at restart.

Any ideas?

I have no idea but about the same issue you just tell.
When just trying XFCE instead of lightdm, it crached sometimes. But I also encountered a havy diskload when I was a while away from the keyboard. Then It took a lot of time to wake it out of the screensaver.
I have quit using it. Went back to Lightdm using the fallback gnome mode.

If it reverts back to the login screen it is probably graphics related; however, spontaneous shutdown is often due to the cpu overheating. 11.10 has 32 days of life left so you may want to consider moving on. XFCE 4.10 is in the 12.04/10 repositories and 4.12 is available via PPA for both releases.
