The last time I did this I experienced severe GPU failures, graphics weirdness, and assorted freezes (sometimes with mouse still active, sometimes not). I'm running on an Intel Core i3 quad core machine with 8GB RAM and an ASUS motherboard with on-board Intel HD 2000 graphics.

You can upgrade and keep your current kernel. If it doesn't work, you can easily restore it at boot.

A nice way to have better control over whats installed and removed is "Synaptic Package Manager" (http://www.googlubuntu.com/results/?cx=006238239194895611142:u-ocqbntw_o&q=synaptic+package+manager&sa=Search&cof=FORID:9).
