Can anybody recommend a very good Linux/Debian paper based book (I cannot read books from a monitor). I want to learn how this(linux) whole OS works, nuts & bolts. Is the Linux cook book 2nd Ed any good, it was available as a download but I no longer see it on the net ???

cheers

A Practical Guide to Red Hat Linux: Fedora Core and Red Hat Enterprise Linux
By: Mark G. Sobell

I know, this book is about redhat not debian, but it is a really good book if you want to learn how the os works. It was a savior in my unix shell scripting class.

P.S. - the similarities between different linux distro's are far greater than the differences.

Running Linux, by O'Reilly. It's not Debian specific, but it's amazing.

I have Red Hat GNU/Linux for Dummies and I enjoyed it. I'd recommend Debian GNU/Linux for Dummies (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0764507133/qid=1111462485/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/104-4330641-3594349?v=glance&s=books&n=507846).

Knock the dummies books all you want, they're quite good for starting Linux users (or any other software for that matter).

For people that can read French, there's a very nice book written by a Debian developer, see
http://www.ouaza.com/livre/admin-debian/

and sorry for the non-French readers :)

Thanks people!

I want to buy 2 books at most, no more.

Maybe I should start a poll as to which books are the best ? Might help others as well.

Any more recommendations I can add to a list ?

thanks

I found "Linux Administration: A Beginner's Guide" by Steve Shah to be the best book for me. I've bought 10-15 books over the last few years, and that one expalined things in a clear, simple manner. It is Red Hat based, but it's also Gnome based (well, RH's take on Gnome) and it gets into the details at the command line pretty well, though not in an intimidating manner.

And as others have pointed out, Linux for Dummies is also *very* useful. Despite having a shelf full of Linux books, I refered to these two 90% of the time for general Linux topics.

Also, you might want to check out your local library. Skim through several linux books, see which ones fit your style, and go buy the updated versions.
