I am thinking of using XBMC as it looks like it can do pretty much everything I want. My question is. As power will be low with a machine like that. How would I go about setting up Ubuntu to only boot with XBMC and its dependences. No shell or anything. And maybe something like gnome do for if I needed to launch the shell for some reason.

Cheers

When you install XBMC an XBMC session entry will be added to the login screen and you'll be ablo to boot into a XBMC-only session. No GNOME or anything else will be loaded. If you want to save space you can start with a minimal install so you can have the components you want and nothing more.

Also, there are distributions specialised for media centers like OpenELEC (http://openelec.tv/).
