*hmph* Guess I'll be trying Mint sooner, rather than later, then.
Thanks for the heads up.

Cinnamon version?
Just signed-up over at their forums and starting research now. Was thinking Mate, as I'm not looking for a new desktop experience at this time.

oh, well, as the old cliche goes: you can lead a horse to the water but you can't make him drink...
even cinnamon is too radical for you...wow...anyway, good luck with your linux mint mate....

Mate
is great. As fast as Xfce and easier to configure. That's what Gnome should have become instead of an abomination it is now.
If by any chance anyone from the MATE team is reading this: you guys did a superb job! Kudos!

Mmmmm... speed of Xfce and looks of Gnome? I'd be in heaven!

I've been messing with Mint 13 Mate, 32-bit, with the 686-pae kernel, for... I dunno... 3-4 hours--on and off. Haven't found anything to dislike, so far.

I already do that for my HP laptop. I have to say among these DEs I've tried, KDE, GNOME3, Enlightment, Cinammon, Openbox, I like MATE the best. I confess that I am an old-style guy who really don't like the tablet concept of DE (Gnome3), therefore I choose to use MATE if I stick with Ubuntu12.04 LTS.
I don't know why but my working desktop is slow with KDE (openSuse), and my old ASUS laptop is no working fine with Enlightment but great with Openbox(Crunchbang). I will try installing MATE on my old laptop/Debian based distro.

Nice.
I'm gonna go download it. I'll get the 64bit version though.

I tried that. It was Not Good, IME. Mate on Mint 13 was much nicer.

I did the 32-bit version because, when I asked over on the Mint forums, a respondent suggested it was six of one, half-dozen of the other, unless you needed Wine, in which case he recommended the 32-bit version. I need Wine for a particular, MS-Win-only vendor-supplied application :(, so 32-bit it was.

The trouble with people is that they don't always know what they're talking about.
32-bit Wine works fine on 64-bit Linux.

I thought it might, but it seems to me I've more often seen people complaining of problems with 64-bit environments than 32-bit ones, so I took the easy way out :p

<snip>
Im pretty sure 12.04 comes in 32 bit, and cant you just install a desktop onto ubuntu ? i.e. gnome classic ? Maybe its just me but I dont see the difference / hype in mint

Let's keep this away from personal poking/jesting please.
Not everyone wants the same things - luckily there are plenty of choices.

Ahh, Hardy Heron, the first LTS that came out after I adopted Ubuntu. You were good to me.
What you guys are saying about MATE intrigues me but I'm absolutely in love with Xfce, not just for the speed but also how it looks. It will take a lot to ruin that love.

All the same for me.
