I'm looking for a DE similar to GNOME 2 with transparency enabled for window decorations and the panel. What's the most resource-efficient way of achieving this? (I don't want any other special desktop effects.)
Thanks!

XFCE/Xubuntu has basic composting. Below is my XFCE session with transparent panel and inactive windows.

The clock is In the add new items to panel menu. (right click & drop down) Ithink it came with xfce-goodies package. I am using the session not the Xubuntu desktop.

Thanks for the reply. I'm using Gnome Classic (no effects), and don't have it. -BillC

Xfce was exactly what I asked for. Thanks! It isn't everything I wanted, but I at least realize now what I want. Transparency is a HUGE step for an acceptable modern theme, but the blur effect behind windows (like with Windows Aero) is equally important. I realize this now, as I see a jumbled mess in my window decorations from everything behind them, making the window titles hard to read. They're already hard to read since they are as transparent as the rest of the window decoration. From everything I have read, xfwm4 does not support any blurring effects, and I would have to go with the dreaded compiz (or maybe something called kwin, which is supposedly even worse).
And the other important function I realize I want is a quick search function. I loved the search in GNOME 3.4, where I could hit <super> and start typing. If I typed a program name and hit enter, it opened. If I typed anything else and hit enter, it opened my browser and searched on Google. I would actually prefer a keyword system. Without a keyword, I would like it to run the input as a command. Prefacing the input with "google" (or whatever) opens the browser and searches Google. "find" might search files and folders. Or maybe I could just choose different searches from a dropdown box and have different keyboard shortcuts for opening the search window with different default search selections. Anyway, I see that Cinnamon looks to have some kind of search box in the panel menu, so I think I might try it out, although I really do like Xfce...
