Hello Everybody,

I'm new to Linux and want to start using it as a primary OS. I have some moderate to advanced experience with computers. I have just purchased a Powermac G5 that is wiped clean (no OS). I have a windows 8 machine and I would like to get Ubuntu installed on the Mac. I have already tried creating a disc image with Ubuntu 12.10 amd64 + mac.iso but the G5 wont read it when i go to the boot selection menu, nor will it boot from the CD by holding C. Has anyone ever done this or could any one offer me any help?

Thanks in advance!

The amd64+mac ISO is for post PowerPC Macs. The G5 is a PowerPC Mac. What you need is the PowerPC ISO. Ubuntu 12.04 was the last Ubuntu Version to support PowerPC on the desktop. You there arel Lubuntu PowerPC ISO's though.

To the Ubuntu 12.04 PPC:

To the Lubuntu 12.10 PPC:

To Lubuntu 13.04 PPC BETA:

Sorry, small typo... I do have the 12.04 not 12.10. The PPC version should show up on the boot selection correct?

No... The AMD64+mac is for Macs that have Intel Technology in them. Like the Core 2 Duos and newer. That ISO dosen't support the G5 Macs. The links I provided are for the G5, G4, and G3 Macs.

Correct, the links provided once burned as a disc image to a DVD should show up in the boot selection (i.e. I download the 12.04-desktop-powerpc.iso, the link provided, then I burn to dvd as a disk image and fire up the G5 into boot selection and it should be here.) This is not happening now because i was trying to boot from an intelMac version?

Yes. The one you had originally was for the IntelMacs. The one you just downloaded as provided by Me is for G5 Macs.

Thank you very much! I got it to show up and its installing now, although it was going through loading the kernel and the screen flashed and went black. I dont think this is supposed to happen?? It is still reading from, and spooling the drive though.
