Why do you have to post about LibreOffice with each minor release? Like this here:

I don't mind it so much (though it's not for me to decide). I wouldbe helpful, though, if he could also mention some of the bug fixes or improvements in the update. That, at least, would be a little more informative.

if we loaded a 4.0.x are we not interested in 4.1 next ?

the issue that we are most interested in is are .docx and .xlsx files accepted by the Thrower of Chairs? He agreed to the ISO standard, indeed he got his ooxml adopted as the ISO standard so it seems to me he really should get his chair fixed, buy a tie, and do business properly .

Sorry, I wasn't aware that posting info that a new Update for LibreOffice was unwelcome.

Many people are experiencing issues with LibreOffice 4.0.0 and 4.0.1 (Myself Included) and I thought they might like to know that a new update is available that might fix there problems.

I was just trying to help the Community by passing on the info.

I have updated my first post with a link to the Releases Notes.

Unfortunately they are only for 4.0.2 RC1.

ok 4.0.2 rc2 is available now for download. however a couple of caveats:

if you need to produce reports from a database using base you will find most of your legacy reports will not run. certainly any generated using 3.6.5 will not run. you also cannot generate new reports with the wizard without using the still rather unusable report builder extension.

for serious work we are using 3.6.5 here which is fine in all the above respects, better yet it generates report definitions which run ok under openoffice 3.3 without modification. this version (3.6.5) is available from the libreoffice 3.6.x ppa and plays happily with the unity global menu.

ok:
what we need is a sticky post with instructions for installing the update. i went thru this for 4.0.0.1
but we really need to get a sticky post up for people like me who are still Linux Beginners,...

Step 1: DOWNLOADS
Go to Libre Office click on HELP and select Check for Updates. This will take you to the Download Sites.
Download both the installer and the online help . save thense to "Downloads" (should be your browser's default download directory ) .

next,-- I think we have to unpack these and then use sudo deb or something to install the software
but this is where my memory goes fuzzy

afterware I think all i do is unlock the start icons from the task bar

but if i remember right when i did this the first time i started by deleting the old software. this to keep the system clean by not having remnants from the obsolete package hanging out on the disk.

I reallly want to repeat my tests with the Studen Pack of MS stuff that I have on my W7 system . getting LibreOffice compatible with the MS stuff -- at least docx and xlsx -- is critical to advancing gthe use of Linux/Ubuntu . This will be a huge benefit to students as they will then have the option to use a much better o/s and not get nickel dimed for various software needs .

Found: Notes: http://napfn.com/LibreOffice%20Install%20Process.pdf UPDATED 2013-04-04 1955 hrs EDT .

I executed thru this successfully .

following install of 4.0.2.2 x86-64
i took the install document and transferret it to Win7 as .docx format
the Windows 7 machine accepted the document using MSFT/Word
I re-saved the document in .pdf format using MSFT/Word

Result Here:
http://napfn.com/LibreOffice%204.0%20Install%20Process-2.pdf rendered by MSFT/Word from docx sent from LibreOffice 4.0.2.2 x86-64

notice the process affected the resulting pdf in format. if a student is required to submit documents in (e.g.) "APA Format" -- this could be trouble...
note: the spacing and format changes appeard in the Word rendition as well . Word has bunches of "helpers" that attempt to help the user get their document formatted properly---- which are a real pain to get rid of--- and very likely could affect the format of documents transferred from LibreOffice/Writer to MSFT/Word . We are testing with Office version 2010 and using .docx format .

I'll bum an APA format doc from my daughter to test with .
