View Full Version : Need perfect Tool for College (eWriter, Tablet)

Hi everyone! I've been looking for some kind of tool (I prefer the use of this word instead of gadget) for my studies.
I'm a civil engineering student, and I've been thinking a lot on how to truly incorporate technology to my student life.
I have a decent desktop PC with Ubuntu 12.04, that serves me well for some tasks (LibreOffice, Octave, PDF reading, sharing documents, etc.) but I'd like to incorporate tech for my classes.
Basically, the perfect tool I need would have:

Decent screen (10" will do) .
Good stylus performance (One of the most important features needed)
Ability to save and edit those notes, either on the device (preferred) or in PC.
PDF reader (an and e-book if possible) with the ability to take notes above.
A web browser may be of utility.

I found some tablets can accomplish those things but the price is pretty high, and they also perform many actions that I don't require.

What I found:

NoteSlate (http://www.blessthisstuff.com/stuff/technology/portable-media/noteslate-the-tablet-that-imitates-paper/): seems a promising product, although it keeps on waiting. It's (promised) low cost is tempting.
Kno Tablet: It was discontinued, but it was the MOST incredible project. It had exactly what I need.
Boogie Board Rip (http://www.improvelectronics.com/boogie-board-LCD-writing-tablet/boogie-board-rip-LCD-writing-tablet.html): Tool that help to take note. Mono color. It can be bought in Amazon for $99. Interesting alternative. Although it only serves for note taking. Forget about PDF files, or ebooks.
Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (http://www.samsung.com/us/2012-galaxy-note-wifi/): This is the tool that is up to my needs. Cons: Cost, and I'll be paying for many uses i really don't need.

Other ideas I've thought where using a Netbok with a Wacom tablet, some tablet (but definitively Galxy Note 10.1 fits best), or some powerfull e-Reader.
If you know something, please share!!

I'd spend the money on the galaxy note.
Anything cheaper will be a compromise

Yeah, anything else is probably going to involve buying a tablet and then buying a stylus afterwards which won't perform as well as the S Pen. What's your budget?

If you just want something for note-taking and are on a budget, you should consider taking notes on paper and scanning them in (if you have a scanner available, that is).

Thank you guys! I thought a lot about it, and I think that, regardless the very high price (for me at least --> Argentina), if we talk about a tool that saves money, time, and is proven to work well, I'll go for that.
Also, I don't care about Note 10.1 getting outdated... as I will use it as a tool not a toy.
