View Full Version : [ubuntu] Issues dual booting with Win 8 on a new laptop

Hi everyone.
After quite some time searching for a solution to my particular problem with no luck, i have decided to turn to the forums with hopes of getting some help :)

Here's what's up: I am on a new Sony Vaio T-Series Netbook running Windows 8, which has an EFI bootloader.

IN my attempt to dual boot, I created a 10gb partition for ubuntu, downloaded the 64-bit version (as suggested by the website due to the EFI boot) and proceeded to boot it from a flashdrive.
The install worked perfectly and ubuntu was up and running.
Thing is, I wasn't able to choose what OS to boot each time the computer booted up, so in my ignorance I used the boot repair software to try and solve the issue. I ended up getting a GRUB RESCUE console interface and had to rebuild my MBR and boot using the windows recovery console.
So now I have ubuntu installed on a separate partition, but have no way of booting into it.

I ran the Boot Info script, here is the output:

Boot Info Script 0.61 [1 April 2012]

Was this an older copy of Mint? Some old versions of grub2 had a bug where it overwrote the entire efi partition erasing Windows. And you do not have the Windows efi files in your efi partition.

You do show a Windows boot loader in the MBR, so did you convert your Windows install from UEFI to BIOS/CSM/legacy?

You will need to use the 64 bit version of 12.10 or 12.04.2 and from the UEFI menu boot the flash drive in UEFI mode. That way it will install in UEFI mode.
Systems need quick boot or fast boot turned off in UEFI settings. Vital for some systems. Best to backup efi partition and Windows partition first.
Use Windows Disk Tools to shrink Windows main partition, but not to create any new partitions, if installing on same drive.

As of 12.04.2, it is possible to install on UEFI systems with Secure Boot enabled (using signed versions of Shim, GRUB, and the Linux kernel). This is only currently set up for Ubuntu (desktop, alternate, and server) and Edubuntu images due to pressures of time; we expect to enable it across the entire Ubuntu family for 12.04.3. Details:

Post the link to the BootInfo report that this creates. Is part of Boot-Repair:

You can repair many boot issues with this or 'Create BootInfo' report (Other Options) & post the link it creates, so we can see your exact configuration and diagnose advanced problems.
Install in Ubuntu liveCD or USB or Full RepairCD with Boot-Repair (for newer computers)

I did attempt to install Linux Mint on this HD before installing Ubuntu. That must've caused the issues you have listed.

While waiting for your reply, I attempted to install Ubuntu once more. The instalation was succesful and now when I boot I get the GRUB bootloader. Thing is that, while I am able to boot into Ubuntu, trying to boot into windows (by selecting the option labeled Windows 8 (loader) (on /dev/sda3)) returns the following error:

error: can't find command 'drivemap'.
error: invalid EFI file path.

How can I fix that?

Here's the link to the BootInfo report: http://paste.ubuntu.com/5635388

Just to clarify, I installed Ubuntu 12.10 64bit on an ext2 filesystem partition (sda8)

Grub2's os-prober still has a bug and only creates BIOS type boot entries.

grub-update fails to detect windows bootloader on a uefi system
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/807801
grub2's os-prober creates wrong style (BIOS) chain boot entry
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1024383
type of entry from Boot-Repair that should work.
'Windows UEFI loader'
Type of entry that does not work:
'Windows ...) (on /dev/sdXY)'

Why ext2? That is now very old, the Ubuntu standard install is ext4 and has been since 9.10. With ext2 you have no journal so repair is difficult or very slow.

Honestly, I used ext2 out of ignorance. Since I hadn't done anything with that install, just performed a clean install using ext4 instead.

Now, regarding the bootloader, I'm sorry but I wasn't able to understand how to proceed. Did you mean that I will be unable to dual boot as I want? Should I use the "Recommended Repair" in Boot-Repair?

After reinstall not sure what recommended repair is, but Boot-Repair usually does the correct thing.

You need Boot-Repair to add correct chain entries as os-prober does not currently work.

If both Windows & Ubuntu are installed in UEFI mode, you can dual boot with most UEFI systems, but not all.
Some need secure boot off, some work with secure boot on and some will only dual boot with Linux in BIOS mode and you have to leap thru the hoops of going into UEFI menu can turning UEFI on or off depending on which system you are booting.

But that is an UEFI issue and the vendor has to update his UEFI. You have to be able to secure boot with Ubuntu or Window as Ubuntu is using the Microsoft key.
