I have made a serious blunder while trying to install Ubuntu 12.04. on my HP G5000 laptop.
I had a sata hard disk plugged into a USB docking station while I was downloading Ubuntu 12.04
to a disc. Somehow I got 12.04 on the new disk and now, when I start up the laptop, the following error message
appears
error: no such device : C4d5732d - 3c18 - 4818 - 86e2 -bca076dd9929
grub rescue>
and it won't boot up to Windows Vista or Ubuntu.
However, if I plug in the sata hard disk docking station, I get the GNU grub version 1.99-21ubuntu3.9 boot option screen
with
Ubuntu, with Linux 3.5.0-25 generic
Ubuntu, with linux 3.5.0-25 generic (recovery mode)
previous Linux versions
Memory test (memtest86+, )
Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)
Windows Vista (loader) (on /dev/sda1)
Windows Vista (loader0 (on /dev/sda2)
I can choose either vista or ubuntu and they will load OK.
How do I rectify this please?
Thanks in anticipation!!
