12.04.2 Live CD UEFI problems.

My new laptop (Compaq CQ45) comes preinstalled with Windows 8.

I've managed to disable Secure Boot and to access the Grub menu from the live CD. Upon clicking "Try Ubuntu" (With added parameter nomodeset), it seems to start just fine. The problem is that about 30 seconds through the splash screen freezes (http://handytutorial.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/ubuntu-logo.png).

What could be the problem? Thanks.

When you see the first Ubuntu screen, press F6 for boot options, and remove the "splash" option (or something like that) from the command line. Then boot, and see how far you get, and when the screen says.

I may need other boot parameters, or nomodeset is not correct.
Or download was not correct, check md5sum, did you download 64 bit version?

(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM) You will need to use the 64 bit version of 12.10 or 12.04.2 and from the UEFI menu boot the flash drive in UEFI mode. That way it will install in UEFI mode.
Systems need quick boot or fast boot turned off in UEFI settings. Vital for some systems. Best to backup efi partition and Windows partition first.
Use Windows Disk Tools to shrink Windows main partition, but not to create any new partitions, if installing on same drive.

Thanks, sorry for the late reply, it says that Windows is already hibernating and it can't use the NTFS drive. Should I create an ext4 partition before hand? I'll try that now.

You need to turn fast boot off. A few computers can only get into UEFI from Windows and if Windows does not boot, you have a brick.
