No, it is not the same. Ubuntu Unity User Interface is sitting on the Gnome 3 Desktop Environment (DE). By installing Gnome 3 shell you get the User Interface that the Gnome organization is developing. When we install Ubuntu Gnome (that is the new name since it was given approval to be a Ubuntu flavour) we get a lot more than just a User Interface. I have installed Ubuntu Gnome by the way - for testing. See, these release notes.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/ReleaseNotes/12.10

You see we get different default applications as well. Regards.

Ey grahammechanical (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=1087323) Thank you for your explanation! I understand it. I've trying it using Virtualbox first. If I like it, I'll install it in my computer. Do you think it better than Ubuntu Unity? Bye!! regards!

It depends on you
what do you like better?
in my opinion unity is much useful and beauty than gnome shell
in beginning it dosn`t matter what shell or desktop you choose the big deal is migrating to GNU/Linux

Hi MustafaJF maybe I choose GNOME, because for me is more clear than Unity. And first likely I can try this desktop and after that choose. Thank you for your help!

perhaps because I'm a former OS X user, I prefer Unity instead of GNOME Shell; with a couple of tweaks, made with dconf and gconf, it works really fine.

I'm a Mac user me too, but only to work. In my free time or in my freak moments I use Ubuntu. I love this OS, but I think OSX it's a great one! The best of Ubuntu I think it is possible use in a lot of computers. i wish they create the Ubuntu Gnome 13.1 soon! My apologize for my English, I'm learning.
