I am also curious about this. I have used one in a browser, but many many programs in linux have options for a proxy in their config files. I have never done this however. For a browser proxy i have just used hidemyass.com. I am not sure how good it is, as I know it is very popular.

I just read that using proxy server is not safe as its administrator can know your login data (username/password) of various sites you log into.

Nope, although I've got it in the back of my mind to set one up for filtering my network once the kids are old enough to be surfing the net. It seems the easiest way to control access across multiple devices and operating systems. Squid seems like a bit of a faff to set up though, which is why I've not bothered yet.

I usually go to nntime or hidemyass for my proxies and then chain them together with proxychains. It can be a hasle to get the different proxies to cooperate with one another so I usually only use 3 proxies at a time. Then i launch firefox like this to use them:

proxychains firefox -safe-mode -private -no-remote

Hardly ever do this though unless I am doing something I do not want to be tracked doing. Sometimes I use tor as an alternate (never with proxychains though).

not really because it slows down my internet

When I used proxies from hidemyass it slowed down my connection too but with tor it comparitively faster.
