installer boot menu unresponsive

I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04, when I get to the installer boot menu (that has the option to install ubuntu..)

my problem is that when I press one of the options:

1. Run Ubuntu from this USB
2. Install Ubuntu on a hard disk

it does nothing and returns to the menu..

Try rebooting and when you get to the first purple screen (you have to be quick) hit any key,
this brings a language selection screen, make choice and hit enter, maybe enter again.
This will bring a new selection screen, does this work any better?

I don't really see a purple screen, anyways I tried pressing keys at all stages of boot process and still no language selection screen pops up...
