Would you try to run Firefox in safe mode from the terminal and see if things go any faster?

firefox -safe-mode

Try opening the pages in chromium to verify that firefox is the problem.

To install chromium you can either do it via the software-center, or hitting WindosKey+A type "chromium" into the dash and it should be available to download, or do it via terminal by typing sudo apt-get install chromium-browser.
