Recently I read a blog post listing the best looking Mac OS X apps (in his opinion , ofcourse), I was wondering if a similar list was to be compiled for Gnome/KDE, which apps would make it?

Please give your reasons when nominating an app, and whether the app is nominated for high usability or for outright 'cool' factor.

So lets go...

Really good looking?

I would say... Superkaramba... hehe

I guess the reason is obvious. :p... Though it depends completely on the theme you're using...

amarok is one of my favorites, and it's one I use the most. Looks agood and has lot's of nice features on it.
I also like Kopete for the same reason.
I'm a big fan of Ktorrent at the minute aswell, the reason being I used bittorrent in Windows, which was fine, then I tried bittorrent and bittornado in Ubuntu, and I didn't like them at all. Ktorrent looks cleaner, supports multiple torrent and gives me all the info/statistics I want to see.

If all Linux applications were as elegant as Gaim 2.0 Beta 3, I would be very very happy. I also happen to love how Abiword, Gtodo, GMPC, and Epiphany look.

I just wish Epiphany was as full-featured as Firefox. :(

The Flock web browser is by far the best looking linux application I've ever used (though I'm a fairly new user). It just lightens up my desktop, but then again, it does the same on my mac and windows pc. I also agree that Kopete looks great, along with the new Skype beta. :D

@lapsey
I totally agree, blender is so uber cool, but then it is available for windows too.

This list was intended to go in the direction of linux only eye-candy.

The best looking app IMO is mplayer (not gmplayer) in full-screen mode. As long as you know the keybord bindings it's just the perfect interface for what it does, complete absense of any annyoing interface thingies.

It's kind of weird to compare apps like this after all the interfaces look alike (I mean the buttons, the menus etc), but if it is to choose one I'd go for amaroK - nice polished buttons (especially in 1.4.1), the album pictures gives a special mood, and the possibility to put a background in the Context Browser.

With proper skinning/editing, you can make any application look "good".

Can you post some screens of Gaim 2.0 beta ? I've seen howtos on installing it but haven't seen anyone say why you would install it. Is it that much better than stable Gaim ?

Agreed, although I don't really enjoy using Flock as much as Firefox. Here's a theme and detailed instructions for making Firefox look like Flock:

This may sound tacky, but it really livens up the browsing experience.

I tend to find programs with simple interfaces to be the best looking. Some of those programs include:

Muine (http://muine-player.org/images/thumb/3/31/BrandonMainPageScreenshot.png/711px-BrandonMainPageScreenshot.png)

Scribes (http://scribes.sourceforge.net/goto.png)

Last Exit (http://www.o-hand.com/~iain/last-exit/last-exit.png)

Of course, a nice GTK and icon theme helps any application.

Ktorrent, Amarok, Gdesklets, K3b

Ktorrent has a good layout, and the search facility is as quick as uTorrent.

Amarok is great in full-screen mode. Easy to click for Collection, Playlists, Info search, Lyric search. Direct link to album covers is nice.

Gdesklets make any desktop look good, especially the side-bars and the Mac-style zoomable toolbar.

K3b is neatly laid out, and has all the funcionality of Nero.

Then it's obvious you haven't tried skinning VLC.

What do you guys have to say about Parallel Desktop's interface:

I find it simple and usable aside from being attractive, what say you?

I agree.

Also Nautilus, especially the spatial variant but browser mode looks ok too. Not too impressive default, but you can do a lot with backgroud colors/patterns and emblems.

Yeah I did the same back around the intial alpha release to my firefox app on Windows.

But I actually find Flock quite as usable and comfortable as Firefox, but I recently switched back to Opera, which may not have the spiffy Flock theme, but it makes up in performance.

---

With my switch to KDE, I also would like to add Amarok to my list of favorite visually appealing Linux apps (though it's also extremely usable).

Gaim 2.0 beta's visuals are better than it's predecessors, but it seems like it still needs much more work to match Kopete.

I like clean easy to understand interfaces, so nano is number one on my list, but for desktop applications i would say XMMS. You can make it look good with anything, and i like how the three parts connect to make a rectangle.
