Is it me? The instructions at http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows are strange:- pendrivelinux looks and feels like somewhere I do not want to go!

If your machine has a DVD drive, why not burn the download iso file
to a DVD and install that way? I use that method for several reasons.
Unless you specifically want pendrive?

I get good results using Unetbootin to make USB boot drives. There are version for Windows as well as for linux.

If you only have Windows on your machine then you need a Windows utility that will install the Ubuntu ISO image on to a USB memory stick so that you can boot from it and install Ubuntu from it. What other choice do you have?

This one - Buy a computer magazine that is giving away a DVD with Ubuntu on it. This is how I first installed Ubuntu five years ago. I had built the machine myself. I did not have an OS. I was not going to buy a Microsoft product. I had no way to download and burn the ISO image to CD. So, I brought a computer magazine and got a Ubuntu disk as part of the purchase.

You can also shop here:

Good Point; I bought my first Ubuntu install disk on ebay, came
with both 32 & 64 bit, $5, shipped. Given my internet service
plan, that is cheaper than downloading at home. I have bought
several other lnux OS since then the same way.

I have downloaded and burned my own, but only when I am able to
make it to the public library. Then I use DVD $.20 compared to USB $8.00
Edit; looked at the link from grahammechanical, these prices are cheaper on ebay

It has worked for me every time. Just make sure that your USB stick is empty before using it.
As for downloads use the torrent from here and add it to BitTorrent, I can get a distro in 25mins.

+1

Unetbootin has never failed for me, even with making bootable usbs of other linux distros it works perfectly.
