is there a way to show a brightness gauge when adjusting the brightness with the hotkeys. Im using a CR-48 so i have dedicated keys. It's not important, just wanted to know if it wad possible.

Yes, in Unity in any case. It usually shows a gauge automatically. Do you get notifications in the top right corner for anything else? (eg volume level, emails...?)

If it doesn't work, there is always this: http://www.noobslab.com/2012/11/indicators-collection-for-ubuntu.html you will find a whole host of indicators for everything, the very first one is to control brightness via a little drop-down menu.

If you're using XFCE desktop, there is a plugin that lets you adjust the brightness of the monitor easily.

To install it just run at a terminal window:

sudo apt-get install xfce4-power-manager-plugins

After install it, just right click on the top panel and choose panel>add new items and search for "Brightness Plugin".
