Trying without success to load ubuntu

I have downloaded ubuntu from Oxford Univ on to a windows Vista pc. I can see a file of 130kb called wubildr.

When I power up I am given the choice of Windows or Ubuntu. Windows works as normal but ubuntu does not. I have a blank screen with cursor in the top left.

Please someone point me in the right direction. I am a windows user (not an administrator) trying to use unix for the first time.

Hello and Welcome

It reads like you are using the Windows installer. Are you seeing a login screen or a black screen ? I would start by reading this page and you may want remove Wubi and download from an official source.

(Wubi) http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer

Many thanks for the response.

I went to the official page for downloading ubuntu and was directed to oxford.ac.uk, presumably as a mirror site. I can see that this produced a windows file wubi.exe of 2.4Mb which I ran.

when I now power up and select ubuntu the screen is completely blank apart from the blinking cursor top left.
