Purple screen on startup after hitting Ctrl+Alt+F7

I'm completely new to Linux. for some reason, when I tried to exit the console(is that the right word?) by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7, it went to a blank purple screen and goes there every time I start up. I saw other people with similar problems, but none of the solutions worked. I have a ATI Radeon HD 5570 graphics card.

So, some clarity please...

Before you pressed <cntl><alt><F7>, where were you? What were you doing? What happened?

Before that happened, where you able to successfully boot to a graphical desktop? Did you just have default graphics drivers installed or the proprietary ATI drivers?

What version of Ubuntu are you running?

After completely shutting down, unplugging your pc and monitor's power cords and unpluging the video cable from your monitor... waiting 15 seconds... plugging back in and booting back up... Does it still boot to a purple screen?
