ok some may know of Steam (steampowered.com) and Team fortress 2. where they're give everyone who plays on a linux system a cool little item.

so i installed the Windows installer for Ubuntu Desktop. i didnt know how much GB to give it so i stuck at 18GB. everything worked fine. Ubuntu loaded fine, after getting my internet working, i got steam downloaded and team fortress 2, but having problems loading up the game. so i restarted steam, but kept getting an error saying like "fatal error: and something to do not connected to the internet to update or something. i dont remember. so i was going to google it while i was on ubuntu, but i couldnt get the firefox to work, though i had an internet connection, so i restarted my pc. and now ubuntu wont even load. comes up with a black screen and a console like text. so i uninstalled it and reinstall it, now its saying i have 2 ubuntu installed on my boot screen. windows, ubuntu, ubuntu. i dont know how i got 2, when i uninstall the one i have installed, it still says i have one, and still comes up with a bunch of text on a black screen. i dont know how to debug or how to use linux software in general. so telling me to go somewhere and type something doesnt help cause i dont know what im doing, what things mean or what to do. ive tried doing a system restore before i installed anything to do with ubuntu, still doesnt work.

this is a pictures of the black screen with text that i mention. http://puu.sh/23Bnk its just 1 of the 2 different screens ive had. the other screen let me do things, but i dont remember, nor i can even get to that screen again.

from the little bit of time i was on there, i liked it a decent amount, weird having the clock in the upper right hand of the screen to lower right hand, the exit button for everything on the top left instead of top right, and the task bar on the left side compaired to the bottom.

this is why i didnt offer to pay anything when it prompted me, cause i knew i might have problems, i always do. so far ive had to redownload it like 5-6 times. i wouldnt mind paying for it, if i knew i wouldnt have so many problems with it AND have money to even offer. i have till feb. 28th to get this installed correctally. im planning to keep ubuntu installed after that and try to use it more often. its different from windows (still using windows 7)

so my questions are, what do i need to do to fix this (obviously.
what did i do wrong in installing those things. if any.
how do i navigate the files, like for windows you can set files, folders and programs to have special permissions. how do i do that in ubuntu? cause for steam, you need to allow the system/other groups full control of the steam folders.

thanks in advance

in that first link. idk what
"use gparted or partedmagic to create 3 partitions:
- / : root, bootable, ext4, ~ 12 Gb (take note of its name: /dev/sd? , will be asked when installing in manual mode by choosing "Something Else" into the installer.
- swap : about 2 Gb (4 Gb if suspend/hibernate will be used)
- /home : ext3 or ext4 format, unlimited space to store your data and settings"

means. though ty for the other link

i got everything working. i used the other forms of ubuntu lke kubuntu. they worked fine. idk what messed up with ubuntu, but i suggest trying those other forms before anything else. theres like 4 other options to use. but good luck
