I'm a newbie in the world of computer aided design, but I am trying to design and build a battlebot and I figure this might be a project where I can get my fingers caddy.

I want something free (as in beer) - that's right, I'm a freeloader :P I was thinking of using the Windows version of SketchUp (http://www.sketchup.com/intl/en/product/gsu.html) on the Windows 7 part of my computer. But then I thought: I use Ubuntu for just about every other computer-related activity, why not use an Ubuntu-compatible "CAD" thing? I looked at the Ubuntu Software Centre (yuck!) and found 3 apps that might be applicable - LibreCAD, PyCAD and SagCAD.

So here I am, asking for suggestions as to which might be most suitable. Please bear in mind: I am a newbie to the world of Computer Aided Design, and right now the only project I am thinking about is the design of a/some battlebot(s).

Any suggestions? All are welcome. Cheers!

I've bounced this because I have no CAD experience and really want to be sure I get the best of these free apps.

Please give me a clue? Ta very much!

PS: I installed SagCAD and can't make head nor tail of it. The online manual doesn't help me at all (I am an utter noob when it comes to CAD). Pleeeze help me please?

Don't really understand free beer.

If after looking up battlebot , and if a battlebot is as what they say ,"battlebot" then that has got more to do what is learned by the mind + experience,
and applying it . If looking to rolling out surfaces "old term Engineering drawing" , not sure if they still teach it, good old paper and pencil + rubber sounds good to me , most of of them come free if you already got them.

+ probably quicker than trying to learn Cad, on the Cad side look for something in the DFX department, if it can role out surfaces then this may fill part of what you will be looking for.

Good luck.

I don't do CAD, but I did find this:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuEngineering#CAD

There is a section on CAD if you care to look; just scroll down.
