I was wondering if there's any tablets in existence that runs on linux, and who are a ready alternative to android based tablets (including kindle fire).

I'm not thinking about putting an Ubuntu image on an existing tablet, I'm simply wondering wheter or not you can buy any linux based tablet that's actually ready to run out of the box, other than android tablets.

It was called Spark, now it's called Vivaldi. It comes with a KDE Plasma Active distro based on Mer.

Preorders are closed now, but you can subscribe and be notified when they release more.

I actually knew about Vivaldi, and I even checked out their page before posting this thread, but as you said, orders are closed, so it's not something that's actively sold at the moment.

In a sense, Android is linux. It's more of a unix though than anything.

Slightly off-course, but is there a tablet-optimised form of Ubuntu already in development? I can see that Ubuntu wouldn't need much changing except for the title bar and removing windows. The workspace switcher would make a great app switcher.

I wonder if the Ubuntu Phone OS will run on tablets. At the moment regular Ubuntu already runs on Google Nexus 7:
