12.04 to 12.10 package manager conflict

I am unable to upgrade my netbook from 12.04 to 12.10 due to a package manager conflict. The upgrade always fails and says that it "cannot get an exclusive lock" due to a package manager that is running. I cannot find any other apt-get or package manager that is running. Any ideas?

Try removing the lock


sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock
