I need/want to be able to install Ubuntu on a usb/pen drive and be able to carry around with me and use it when I am at public computers at work and school. Kinda like a live dvd but I have to be able to run it within windows (like a VM) but it must be self contained on the pen drive, is that possible to do and if so how?

It is not a problem to put an Ubuntu virtual machine on a pendrive and run it from Vbox installed in Windows, (and vice-versa).
I think there is also a portable version of Vbox for windows.
Edit:

Be careful though, I recall running something like this a few years ago and it messed up the version of Vbox that was installed on the machine.
