Running Ubuntu 12.04, latest updates. I'm using gnome classic (no effects) as my shell and moved the top bar to the right side of the screen. The window list plugin continually crashed so had to remove it in favor of the windows app icon. Any ideas?

You are probably using indicator-applet-complete. Look in your software center to see if you are and if so try reinstalling it.

Reinstalled it and didn't get a crash when I added it to the panel, but not displaying any of my open windows either.

To clarify, if you "add to panel" and select "window list", that is the applet I'm adding that crashes, or just doesn't work. I have that bar on the right side of the screen. All I get when I add the applet is a small grey square that shows nothing. If I have the bar on the top of my screen it works as expected.

Yep, you are right. Just tried it and it will not work on the right.
