After I updated today my 11.10 with the gnome-session-fallback package to 12.04 LTS , I'd lost the volume control icon from the top toolbar. Advice from below offered some help but I could not get things permanent.

Indicator Applet Complete is available with alt+right click on the top toolbar but I just wanted what I had before, just the volume control icon on top. Success with-

System tools>preferences>Startup Applications then open add box

I named it Volume Control
command was gnome-sound-applet

A reboot proved the changes had stuck but for what it's worth alt+right click still doesn’t show the volume icon option.

I worked on this for a few hours though I add that Ubuntu Forum Search was of no help at all. Could be me I suppose?
