Upgrade

I have upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10. Now when I boot it boots into MEMTEST.
I have looked in grub and there are only 2 memtest progs. there

I'd like to point out that newer does not necessarily mean "upgrade." If you don't need something specific in 12.10, then restoring from your 12.04 backup and living with that until 14.04 LTS would not be a bad idea.

Every 2 years, a sable release of Ubuntu is made. All the intermediate versions are "beta" quality at best and often just "alpha" quality as new features are attempted.

what happen when you boot into recovery mode ?
