12.04 Suddenly Reeeeally Slow

Ubuntu DE has suddenly become really slow. I.E. I click on shutdown and the dropdown box takes ~5 mins to show. Other apps like Firefox take even longer to load.

The machine boots OK and login appears to be OK too. I can also login remotely using Putty on a ******* box without problem.

Any ideas anyone? I'm fresh out. :confused:

Mine too is sometimes slowing down :( I have the Gnome 3.4.2 and when i play nibbles it's get's slow . . . But only an occasional lag...

This is consistent. I've just tried to open the dash and I gave up and restarted after around 15 mins.

Is there a way to remove and reload the desktop SW using a remote login?

Are you using unity??

What does the hard drive activity look like during the slowdown? It may be bogging down into excessive swap activity if you are running too many programs for the available RAM to effectively support.

But even though not excessive, my lap too is using too much processing power some times!! :confused:

Sorry, I don't know what Unity is. I'm using the bog standard Ubuntu install.

Disc activity is light there doesn't appear to be any thrashing going on.

Sussed it out. It was the video drivers. Isn't it always the drivers!

I used Putty to remote on and used the command line to update and repair.
