Ubuntu/ xbuntu on one operating system

I have upgraded my computer. My old system has ubuntu + xfce = xubuntu. I have the option to choose what system I want to load up before I enter my password. I have loaded the xubuntu into my new computer but it is only giving me the option of xubuntu or xfce on the drop down bar below the password. I have tried to download different ISO's but they are all the same. I'm looking xubuntu with the option of the three different ISO's. Can anyone help me please? I have used gnome but it still doesn't give me the options i'm looking.

When I've done what I think you're asking about I load mainline Ubuntu then add whatever alternatives I want. Xfce, LXDE, gnome-shell. gnome-fallback, whatever. I guess you could even add PPAs for MATE and Cinnamon. Mainline Ubuntu with Xfce will not the same as Xubuntu. Xubuntu comes with different (lighter) applications. When I did it, I wound up with 2 file managers, Nautilus & Thunar. That caused some confusion. I haven't done this for a year or two so things may have changed.

If I understand your question correctly, what you can do is:


sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

This will install Ubuntu/Unity on top of your existing Xubuntu/Xfce system, giving you the opportunity to choose between Unity or Xfce each time you log in.

I've used Ubuntu but recently just added XFCE to allow me the choice of desktop environments. I have all my Ubuntu apps like Libre Office etc but they are now available via XFCE menus - I like this combination. I have found that applications are much quicker under XFCE than Unity eg Oolite frame rate under Unity is 35-50, whereas with XFCE it is 40-70.
