I tried to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive. I would like my installation to work on two different computers.

I had an old 10.10 version running on a hard drive, when I switched the HD to another computer it didn't recognize the wifi card and there were some other hardware problems. Now I want to install 12.10 but I don't know what the proper way to do this would be.

I installed 12.10 on my external HDD using the installation CD, kind of like those (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent#Method_1:_Installing_Ubu ntu_directly_to_USB_drive_from_installer_CD) instructions. I installed the bootloader on sdc then when I selected the device during the boot it says there is no valid drive to boot from. The instructions say to go replace sdb by sda in menu.lst but that's for grub 1...
