Hi,

I allowed a routine update of my Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit desktop installation and it fails to boot and sticks at once showing to monitor's built in 'out of range' message.

Until now this message has been a fimiliar visitor to my screen as it has always appeared for around 30 seconds on booting. I've assumed it was something to do with the graphics drivers. It did not happen with a previous monitor (now deceased).

I have tried to boot into a basic mode or terminal mode but totally failed in this. I can't make the boot menu come up with a choice.

I can boot the hardware with the installation cd and this functions normally in 'try ubuntu' mode.

If the worst comes to the worst I can recover most of my files by copying them across the network but there are some that are in an encrypted folder Which I cannot copy, so I really want to get this installation working again if at all possible.

It is a foxconn motherboard with on board nvidia graphics running an asus monitor about three years old.

Help!
