I have downloaded the exe file, but do not know how to move it to a usb drive. I am trying to install ubuntu on a HP laptop that does not have an os. Could someone please help me with this situation.

You can't install wubi (ubuntu inside windows) on a computer that is not already running windows.

You need to download the ISO file for the 32bit or 64bit desktop OS, burn a cd from the image (not just the ISO file on the cd), and boot the computer where you want to install with it.

If you want only ubuntu on that computer, you can use the Erase and use whole disk option, that will install it for you.

Alternatively you can use manual partitioning if you feel comfortable with it.

yeah! you said already there is no OS,I forgot. ok If you to create a live USB may be your friends should have OS . No problem even it is windows.

If your friends are having Ubuntu then there is Application named as Start Disk Creator , from unity dash you can access it.

If your friends are having Windows , then look here

Another question before I do anything. Then CD I ave to burn ubuntu on is too small. 56mb short. Is there a way to compress the file so it will fit to the disc?

Have you got a spare USB dongle you can wipe? You can then use that to install Ubuntu instead of a disk (you don't have a blank DVD?).
