I don't know how many of you have been following the Open Source Ecology (http://opensourceecology.org/) project, but they have been making some insane leaps lately.

Dec 18th 2012 was a momentous day for us - when we achieved the one day production of our automated CEB (compressed earth brick) press. We now aim to crazy-optimize the production of each of the 50 GVCS (Global Village Construction Set) machines to a single day of production. Our methods are hypermodularity, simplicity of design, and digital fabrication, combined with a core value proposition of 100% open source design. Based on these results, I feel proud that OSE received distinction as Time Magazine’s Best Inventions of the Year in 2012.

It's come a long way since the TED Talk (http://www.ted.com/talks/marcin_jakubowski.html), and it was already impressive then! This is a shining star in the limitless void of our future's night sky, IMHO. I love to throw money at these guys because I can't be involved (although I'm broke and between jobs at the moment), but I plan to involve myself with them more directly at some point, since a human's direct involvement is worth a lot more than the amount of money I'm able to contribute.

What do you people think?

I found a couple of open source 3D printers out there. Here's a small portable one that can make home fittings, possibly:

Oh wow, that's amazing! I should hunt around, I heard there was a Kickstarter project to develop a really cheap open source 3D printer for home use, dunno if it's finished funding yet or not.

These folks should pack some sea containers and bury them. So when we have destroyed the earth, or it gets destroyed by an asteroid, we will have a nifty tool kit to dig up.

I'm waiting for the TV show.

Amazing what community can achieve. Civilization really has evolved.

Second time I've been taken to a Shuttleworth-funded open source initiative today.

In fact, I'm going to post about the other....

Both my lack of money (Ubuntu) and my actual money (OSE) seem to dovetail where Mark Shuttleworth is concerned. :D
