Latest kernel upgrade alternately boots into Konsole

Using Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit, I had a recent Software update of the kernel to 3.2.0-37-generic. Since then, about every other boot puts me into an unfamiliar Konsole asking for a password and user name. Have others experienced this, and if so, what is the solution?
