i been thinking about applying for ubuntu membership but I'm not sure about the contributions part. how much of a contribution do i need to be considered?

What contributions are you already making? Think not of contributions needed for membership. Think only of contributing for the benefit of the Ubuntu community. Otherwise, all you end up with is a meaningless label.
