My first screenshot of the month, and my probably my first screenshot since coming back from winter vacation as I've been pretty busy lately. No, I'm not posting a (K)(X)(L)Ubuntu right now.

Full-size screenshots here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/Screenshots/ScreenshotArch2.jpg

Another shot of my Arch Linux install, running the KDE desktop. I've gotten Arch to work very well for me, having learned some of its inner workings. The wallpapers are ones that I've used for my KDE installs before, a pair of custom-made (by me) Hatsune Miku wallpapers. The rest of the interface, I very much mimicked my Kubuntu install... using a Mac OS X style interface.

All in all, pretty much anything I can do on Ubuntu or its derivatives, I can do in Arch just as easily with a little manual installs and some compiling from the AUR. So a part of me is wondering whether I should make Arch my primary Linux in place of Kubuntu, my secondary Linux in place of Bodhi, or whatever. :D

Computer: Desktop
Distro: Arch Linux
Desktop Environment: KDE Plasma 4.9.5
Plasma Theme: Amakage (from KDE-Look)
Window Theme: Oxygen Transparent (from AUR)
Color Scheme: Obsidian Miku (modified from Obsidian Coast)
Left Wallpaper: custom-made Vocaloid 2 "Hatsune Miku Collage 1" (16:9 version)
Right Wallpaper: custom-made Vocaloid 2 "Hatsune Miku Collage 2" (16:10 version)
Icons: Oxygencolors v6.2 (Cyan color)
Dock: Docky ... features include: Anchor logo removed using gconf, Custom launchers for Takeoff Launcher, Plasma Activities, Dolphin, and link to my Zelda fanfiction... all with custom icons, all pre-made before dropping into Docky
Special Features: Dual displays, Takeoff Launcher

I really like the one on the left (with the white fence).

My current (wallpaper) theme is Steampunk. "Fabulous" February? Now it reminds me of something...

By the way, it's been a while, Ubuntu Forums. And really a "while," since I've been getting on my PC running Windows, and left my Ubuntu laptop running as a media server.

For once today, I tried having the PC off, and borrowed the monitor...

(Speaking of AWN, I'm seeing folks similarly attired, but they have somehow managed to remove the unremoveable green cross from the dock. That! I would change if I learned how this was done!)

Thanks ;D Yes, it is pure KDE and Kwin. My own personal layout, which came from preferring the ambiance and Ubuntu layout, but not really caring for the Unity Dock or App menu layout, so consequently moving to another DE.

The theme is "ambiance" which you can get in the "get new desktop themes" dialog.

After which i kinda just contorted and moved panels around and junk, and using Cairo-dock.

I forgot I had tried the Ambiance theme already but got rid of it because I like to have the bar on the left side of the screen, and with the Ambiance theme the panel looks a little funny when it's on the side. One half of it is darker looking than the other.

Here's my KDE setup, currently using the Fushigi theme and Cairo dock.

Nice :) Of course the best thing about KDE, is the customizing options, to the point we can make it look pretty much anyway we desire, and even mimic other DE if we so choose.

I just found out you can get KDE to behave the same way! Who knew? You just need to install plasma-widget-menubar and appmenu-gtk (the latter to make it work with GTK programs).

This is just FYI, of course, but it makes me happy. I distro-hopped for awhile but I think I've definitely settled on KDE-based for the foreseeable future. I really like the configurability, and in my experience KDE apps and utilities just work better without as much fiddling. Okay, I'll step off the soap box now.

Oh, wow, that's fun. The one thing I find myself appreciating whenever I use a Windows 7 install (have not yet owned 8) is the ease with which it can be made pink. The purple is weird, striking, and quirky.

I'm ridiculously happy with my current setup with Pantheon on 12.04. All the bits just seem to be working together for once. I couldn't believe that Plank actually properly supports Chrome webapps, totally without fuss.

I was actually able to do that with Docky when I was test-running Peppermint OS... a Lubuntu-based distro that's centered on web apps. Granted, not all the web apps I ran were Chrome apps, but I had them made in Ice and dragged them from where the .desktop files were into Docky with no fuss.

That aside, I have another screenshot of my Arch Linux install.

Full-size screenshots here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/Screenshots/ScreenshotArch2rosa-2.jpg

This is largely the same desktop as in the previous screenshot, except for maybe a tweak or two to the desktop. Aside from a few Docky additions (that aren't seen due to the ROSA Launcher), I'm now running ROSA Launcher instead of Takeoff Launcher. As nice of an app launcher as Takeoff Launcher is, it still lacks the ability to shutdown/logoff/suspend directly from the launcher, unlike Kickoff, Lancelot, and ROSA Launcher. To me, that's a crucial feature.

On top of that, this is the latest stable vanilla ROSA Launcher, which comes with a solid background image. I disabled the background, preferring my translucent Plasma widget theme, and I recolored the Lock and Shutdown buttons to match my Hatsune Miku theme.

Tweaking sure is fun... and is the real beauty of most Linux DE's.

note: I also included my previous screenshot to illustrate KWin's Blur effect on transparent Plasma widgets and windows

Computer: Desktop
Distro: Arch Linux
Desktop Environment: KDE Plasma 4.9.5
Plasma Theme: Amakage (from KDE-Look)
Window Theme: Oxygen Transparent (from AUR)
Color Scheme: Obsidian Miku (modified from Obsidian Coast)
Left Wallpaper: custom-made Vocaloid 2 "Hatsune Miku Collage 1" (16:9 version)
Right Wallpaper: custom-made Vocaloid 2 "Hatsune Miku Collage 2" (16:10 version)
Icons: Oxygencolors v6.2 (Cyan color)
Dock: Docky ... features include: Anchor logo removed using gconf, Custom launchers for ROSA Launcher, Plasma Activities, Dolphin, and link to my Zelda fanfiction... all with custom icons, all pre-made before dropping into Docky
Special Features: Dual displays; ROSA Launcher (with recolored Lock/Shutdown icons and no background image) (from AUR)

DobsonM, thanks for the clarification. Very cool - it's getting hard to tell user-modified Shell from the 50 different Mutter forks in play right now. = ) But it's very attractive.

Yeah, and Plank is a Docky fork. It used to work with DockBarX and Unity, I think, but Chrome changed their handling of webapps, the windows identified themselves differently, and the docks couldn't tell them apart again.

With Plank (and presumably Docky) now, it's as simple as going to Chrome's menu to create an "application shortcut" for the "applications menu," running the app, and pinning it to the dock - no command line or file managing involved - although I still edit the .desktop files to make the icons Faenza instead of the default favicon. = ) (Oh, and I should say, that works whether or not the site is a Chrome webapp.)

As nice of an app launcher as Takeoff Launcher is, it still lacks the ability to shutdown/logoff/suspend directly from the launcher, unlike Kickoff, Lancelot, and ROSA Launcher. To me, that's a crucial feature.
Yeah, I'm used to having a Quit menu indicator, but I like that Synapse offers session actions, too. I guess it was not so bad all those years of Windows putting Shut Down in the Start menu. = )

It depends on the setting. KDE seems to do a fine job but you have to select 'cropped and scaled' or the wallpaper will be out of proportion. 'scaled and keep proportion' can leave black bars around the wallpaper. Or you mean the scaling algorithm is bad? Maybe that also depends on the WM/DE.

yeah from old gnome2 and xfce now it seems like the scaled option is somewhat blurry or sometimes something is off the screen. so i just scale the image with gimp to my resolution and then it's fine

I've never been a fan of having the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. I much prefer it up top or on the left as Unity has it. Here I have two taskbars on the top. One thin taskbar with the notification area, clock, etc., along with an auto hide one that's much larger with Unity-esque icons on it. This way I get to experience maximum screen real estate while having what I want/need visible at all times, along with app switching/opening just a click away. I also have my left AND right screen edges set to show all windows. It's the ultimate multitasking setup, in my opinion.

http://i.imgur.com/vFpXEkkl.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/vFpXEkk.jpg)

I absolutely love what you did there. That was exactly what I set up my KDE instance to do, however I am quite fond of having the min/max/close on the left side. I was revealing my "kUnity" bar constantly when I would venture to that corner... so much to the point that I just put the bar on the top, so when I hover up top it reveals itself on top of the regular bar with the time, notification area, etc.

Do you know how to adjust the auto hide sensitivity of KDE panels? If so I wouldn't mind trying this setup again.

Unless... are you not using auto hide? Maybe I'll try without auto hide to see if I can get used to it... :) In fact, that's a common question I have when I see screenshots here. I wonder how many users turn off auto hide in an effort to get the screenshot vs how many leave their Unity bar revealed 100% of the time.

EDIT - Here's an updated screenshot of what I'm working with now. Simply moved the bottom panel to the top, stripped some widgets, added a new left panel and an icon based task manager, and bam. Here you have it.

I do have to say, the Unity layout is undoubtedly catchy, but KDE's depth of customizability and level of design with awesome native applications are a substantial +1. With this, I have the best of both worlds.

Same old stuff - Xub 12.04 / Conky / Ambiance Red XFCE - LXDE Window Borders from Ravefinity / Shiki Noveau Statler GTK theme from XFCE Look / Faenza Icons (used xfce appfinder icon for appmenu) / Wallpaper found on the googles with search term minimal.

(I haven't tried Cinnamon since it first came out... Prob going to try that again sometime this week...)

Thanks. :-) I'm not sure if you mean the phone itself, CyanogenMod, or my Ubuntu Phone OS recreation attempt, so I'l rate all 3.

Phone - 6. The hardware is not the best but it's proven to be a quite reliable little thing.

ROM - 8. I love all of the customization and streamlining of CyanogenMod. And being rooted is the only way to go!

"Ubuntu Phone OS" - 8. I'm just getting used to using gestures that will be used when the OS is released. It's Android obviously but the way I use my phone is completely changed after trying to recreate the interface. I really like it, and I love that when I turn on my phone, I get an Ubuntu boot animation. If I'm having this much fun with an interface clone, it gets me very excited for the release of the OS, and it was worth all of the trouble to get it just right.

I've been suffering from the addiction to themes lately. It also doesn't help that KDE has an obnoxious amount of configurable settings. I ended up taking the "Gentle" color scheme and edited it a bit, mostly by editing the Window Background color to be a little darker and changing out the highlighted color scheme to correspond with the colors of the icon theme in use. Then I picked up the big icon pack from kde-look.org which contains many different variations in one package, along with a simple .sh script to run to change them to another variation.

http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/oxygencolors?content=104048

Between the different options, my two favorites ended up being blue and orange, which ironically coincides with the default scheme of KDE (blue) and the default scheme of Ubuntu (orange).

Blue layout with Oxy Navy blue icons:

This layout successfully combines the configurability and extensibility of KDE while including the oddly comfortable layout of Unity... I call this layout... Kunity. :guitar:

Kwin (KDE's compositor and WM) is awesome. Very flexible. Automatically disables effects if your system doesn't support OpenGL enough in Linux (like my Intel graphics :( ) while still providing some nice non-OpenGL effects. Wobbly windows and desktop cube are available in Kwin if that's what want and OpenGL rendering is working for you.

However that's just one part. KDE is of course much more but also very different in approach compared to Unity. Maybe KDE is the opposite of Unity. Unity has great defaults but is harder to customize (+ customization just makes Unity uglier in most cases imho). KDE has boring defaults, and bad font settings compared to Unity. That begin said: The quantity of settings you can change without ever opening a terminal or editing a config file is insane. Everything can be setup with mouseclicks. Get new themes, change colors, fonts, put widgets on the desktop, remove widgets, adjust panels, create new panels, drag panels to edges of the screen... the list goes on forever :P

I agree with you there. KDE's font leaves a little bit to be desired. Quite honestly, I just feel as if it's too dang small out of the box. Once you bump it up in size to a normal 11/12-esque level it looks far better, but still not as clean as what you'd find in a stock Ubuntu install. I think I actually saw a bug report regarding it, suggesting that a newer KDE version should have better rendering. I forget if that was to be 4.10 that's currently out or if it's the upcoming 4.11. Either way, throwing that out there.

KDE's default layout, while certainly easy to use and very functional, leaves a bit to be desired for me as well... but I'm also not somebody who likes having bottom-justified panels... even on Windows, I move that to the top. Not to pick a fight, but it's not as bad as Xubuntu's default layout... sorry, blunt 2c there. To be fair to Xubuntu, that is one setup that can also be customized very nicely as well, but out of the box it hurts my eyes. Also, can I just say, working with Samba shares with Dolphin/KDE is an absolute treat. It's significantly faster than .gvfs with zero load time. The only road block I ran into was I had trouble streaming videos over Samba through Dolphin. Some digging suggested it was an authentication issue in regard to how KDE works vs .gvfs. Simple fix, open VLC, access modules, expand to SMB - put in your credentials and bam - problem fixed. ;)

I've noticed an uptick in the amount of KDE screenshots here too, with myself being an example. It's not to say I dislike Unity in the slightest, in fact I'm very fond of Unity. But it's impossible to argue that with a little tweaking in KDE, I can have my beloved Unity layout with additional speed that 4.10 brings plus a truckload more functionality that I never thought was possible. With this setup, I can't lose. :P

I posted it a few pages back, but here's my current layout and theme that I finally settled on. I'm still messing around with widgets... there's just so many out there, a lot of that are surprisingly handy.

Gentle color scheme, window background modified to be a little darker, oxygencolors 6.2b icon set with oxy navy selected for folders. Bottom panel moved to top, task manager/kmenu launcher removed (spacer added), 2nd panel added to left with icon task manager and kmenu.

It's a borderless window for terminator. With openbox you can choose borders or not.
Here you are a "normal" window:

For the time being I popped back over to my regular Unity install. There's definitely a sense of cleanliness with Unity. KDE takes the cake with an absurd amount of customizable options, but Unity just feels clean and simple while still giving me the main options I want. Plus KDE's font rendering hurts my eyes. :( We'll see who takes the cake down the road though... definitely a ton of good from both environments. :P

Current desktop. All stock, icons adjusted to 32px.

Yeah Unity is just more polished, especially when you compare the default look. That's why I have switched back and forth between Ubuntu and Kubuntu ever since 11.04. You can tweak the font settings in KDE to make it better, I'm quite satisfied with my current settings. It's very hard to get the Ubuntu quality though. No idea what Ubuntu is doing with the fonts but it's something awesome.

Well that's not really long enough to evaluate a desktop environment. But if you are happy with Unity, then there's no reason to switch.
