I did an update recently and it broke my drivers forcing me to reinstall them. All fine and dandy it happens.

I noticed that while no drivers were installed I had this awesome Gnome-2 like shell. I am assuming it was Gnome 2D. With the Applications and Places menu and everything. Panels and it was fun to play with. I assumed this was part of the update until I rebooted and its back to Gnome Shell 3.

How do I get that awesome experience back? I cant choose it from the login menu I cant find any information pointing to it on Google (Google seems to be getting less and less useful).

Please help I desperately want the old Gnome 2 look and feel back. I don't want to install Mate as it has it's own set of issues.

If this is 12.04 you can open a terminal and enter:

sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

And choose at login.

Thanks for the info they need to stop changing little things around that dont need to be like creating links on the desktop and removing key features. They need to pay attention to the power users coming into Linux. I mean KDE has the power I like but I sometimes prefer Gnome for some of the apps.

I am using gnome fall-back for the speed atm and because I like Gnome. I really will give mate a go for its money or cinnamon.
