Hello and welcome

If you are asking "can I install Ubuntu on to a bare system with no existing OS?" then the answer is yes - you just need a bootable CD / DVD / USB

IMO it's actually easier that way (no worries about partitioning / accidental overwriting etc.)

Welcome to forums.

If your question is on updating BIOS, then it varies a lot by motherboard vendor.

My older system has three choices. Only one requires Windows. One directly reads an update file from a FAT formated flash drive and the other is similar but you create a bootable flash drive (Boots with DOS) and use that.

Is system a new UEFI system as that has a lot more function-ability and has its own drivers. Also install methods then may vary depending on if you boot in UEFI mode or BIOS/legacy/CHM mode.
