FYI: Just noticed that Deepin has created a new DE as an alternative to Gnome Shell.

This...

It looks a lot like Chrome OS at first glance, though I've never used Chrome OS.

I know that Gnome Shell has it's fans but I can't help thinking that Gnome Shell is little more than a niche player at this point (though I don't know what Shell's user-share is).

Unity (46.78%)
Gnome 3 (28.42%)

Seems there is a significant user base, unsure how much that has eroded with the rise of Linux Mint.

You don't know, but you'll make the claim anyway? :)

I will venture (with equal evidence), that the many, many Gnome 2 forks must be even more niche, with the exception of Cinnamon, perhaps.

Wow. A DE with a start button and taskbar and even nested menus. Never seen one of those before. Color me unimpressed.

It has transparency and is full screen!

So hard to please these days :(

Yeah, I'm willing to make the claim, and my claim wasn't far off. In fact, the damage is worse than I expected; but my thanks to ikt for the link.

I may download Deepin just to take a gander, though I'm very happy with Xubuntu.

Article is from 2011, out of date.

The claim was very far off. Firstly, it was a survey of Ubuntu users, with Unity the default DE, and Gnome Shell needing to be installed. Secondly, even taking the results at face value, Gnome Shell at 28.42% is "a niche player"? What does that make Xfce (Xubuntu at 7.58%), KDE (Kubuntu at 6.92%) and especially Gnome Fallback at 5.95%?

It's almost like you are trying to make some sort of disparaging point...

The poll is fairly useless now, given the date. But no, ~30% would certainly not be "niche," any more than Unity's plurality at <50% would be.

Edit: Oh, and that's for share on Ubuntu desktops, of course, not Linux desktops. I wouldn't be surprised to find that Shell overall had slightly higher numbers than Unity does (or really, the reverse, either.)

I'm fine with no DE at all.

Does that have any transparency?

DEs aren't compositors. You can always install compiz on openbox.

Sorry was being a bit facetious :p
