View Full Version : Is this free-hosting-forever promotion too good to be true, or too good to pass up?

Dear all,

I've been alerted to a promotion for free webhosting forever by a certain Elk Host, a company I've never heard of.

We currently have hosting with a well-established company (GoDaddy) and we were wondering whether it would be wise to switch over to Elk Host.

Can anybody please confirm whether this promotion is too good to be true, or whether it's too good to pass up?

Thank you.

Sounds like some of the free hosts I've seen.

Check here: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/

I didn't find anything there on them and I have never heard of that hosting company before, so it would be a calculated risk.

Personally I'd stay with GoDaddy if it is working for you.

My rule when it comes to web hosting free or paid is to register the domain with one company and host it with another unrelated company. It is also critical to keep a full backup of your website on a computer under one's physical control. This strategy saved my online business 10 years ago when a paid host, Featureprice, went out of business after a year of awful service.

I would pay very close attention to the domain reseller and the underlying registrar. Hosting can easily be changed. When hosting goes bad:

1) Upload the site to the new webhost
2) Change the DNS at the domain registrar.

The only thing your visitors will notice is better service.

One can also change the domain registrar very easily when the site is hosted somewhere else since the DNS does not change with a registrar change.

Your visitors will not notice a thing when the domain registrar is changed in this fashion.

As for GoDaddy I would not go near them for hosting or domain registration.
