I have a fairly new Sony Vaio. It has Windows 8 installed on it. I am trying to setup a dual boot with Ubuntu. I can't get very far, because soon after i boot from a ubuntu bootable USB stick I see teh following screen.

Any idea what could be the problem?

NOTE: i accidentally filed this under lubuntu the first time.

My experience with Sony Vaio laptops are that they will not boot linux. I even called Sony and when I finally got a tech on the phone was a given a BS answer. He basically told me that vaio's BIOS will only boot windows. Whether that is true or not, I was never able to install linux on the 2 Vaios I tried on.

A poster on another forum I belong to said he was able to install Zorin linux on a Vaio after many failed attempts with ubuntu & mint..

What is the exact Sony Vaio model?

This is something you could look into:

I believe the idea to boot into text mode is not that bad.

The alternate text based installer did not work for me. But with a newer vaio maybe it will.

Thank you all for your inputs, I have changed my mind about doing the dual boot for the moment, and I would just like to run Ubuntu from my USB stick. Unfortunately the problem still remains.

I tried the recommendation here, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1487383 but that didn't work for me.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.
