I am wondering what information is given to a wireless network when you connect to it.

Let's say I went to McDonald's and used their open Wifi. What information do they receive?

Or a public library, or maybe a school?

I know they'd receive my MAC address, right? Maybe the machine name? What else?

This all depends on what the network owner chooses to capture.

It could be nothing or they could capture all network traffic. If you are unsure then it is best to assume that everything you do is being captured.

Absolutely; treat any public Wifi as compromised, and assume that all of your data is logged and analysed.
