PS3 - ubuntu 10.04 OS install

Is it possible to install other os ubuntu 10.04 on PS3 ver. 3.15. When the BLURAY drive is broken? I have USB and external DVD drive available.
Can it be done and if so how?

I solved the problem with petiboot 0.2. and my DVD external drive. First I did not think that would work. So the external drive versus USB was a long shot. The only Linux dist I had on disc was Yellow Dog Linus 6.1. That worked fine and I burned Ubuntu Linux 10.04 image file to a DVD. Should have used a CD-ROM instead.
However it was a very slow process.
