View Full Version : [ubuntu] Unity & gnome shell not stable?

For starters: I love gnome-shell and recently fell in love with unity again (had everything I missed in gnome-shell like drag&drop to open with app, win+number to launch app, amazing hud feature etc).

The problem is: they both freeze quite often (unity less). I have to go to tty1 and sudo pkill X. That sucks.

So: I'm looking for help. Should I try XFCE/LXDE? I briefly tested both and there's quite some things I'd miss, namely:

1) app grouping in alt+tab and the use of alt+`
2) unity's hud
3) win+key shortcuts
4) neat notifications
5) a bit of eye candy ('d miss but it probably doesn't matter)
6) some sort of a dock (Docky crashed quite often in gnome-shell) - probably not that necessary

I'd describe myself as a power user (do a lot of coding and stuff). I don't need a tiling WM (eg awesome) as I use only fullscreen apps.

EDIT: Oh and I'm using 12.04 LTS.
